Kindergarten Art: Drawing and Music Theory

Continue your child’s art education with our free kindergarten curriculum, which includes more than 50 guided drawing activities, plus an introduction to important concepts in music, performance, and other forms of art.

Our Curriculum

This curriculum is designed as a direct continuation of our preschool art curriculum, and follows a similar structure. We provide a more than 10 hour YouTube playlist that includes simple hands-on drawing tutorials, fun instructional videos about music theory, and engaging examples of music, performance art, and visual art.

Hands-On Practice

Many of the videos we’ve included in the playlist are designed to walk young children through the process of making various pieces of artwork. These typically rely on the YouTube channel Art for Kids Hub. Whenever you encounter one of these videos in the playlist, you should provide your child with the necessary tools: specifically, paper and appropriate drawing implements (crayons, markers, or colored pencils will work fine). Play the video for your child, and let them follow along with the drawing process.

The drawings for this grade level are slightly more sophisticated than those in our preschool playlist, but they are still quite simple. If you haven’t used our preschool curriculum, and you find that your child struggles with the drawing assignments, it might be helpful to try starting off with our preschool level playlist.

Music Instruction and Inspiration

Our playlist for this grade level places special emphasis on music. We’ve included some basic music theory to give children a very basic understanding of how music works, but mostly, we just give kids a chance to watch some of the world’s best musicians doing what they love. In addition to giving students a taste of what music has to offer, this also gives children something to get excited about and aspire towards. The performances we have included are specifically selected with a young audience in mind, with plenty of motion, enthusiasm, and funny surprises.

Using this Curriculum

The playlist alternates between groups of two different types of videos:

  • Groups of hands-on art tutorials
  • Groups of hands-off videos about other topics (music theory, examples of different types of art, musical performances, etc.)

Each day that you teach art, we recommend completing one of these groups. In other words, on the first day, your child will follow a couple of hands-on tutorials. On the second day, they will watch a few hands-off videos. On the third day, they will complete another couple of hands-on tutorials. Continue like this until you reach the end of the playlist. This will take approximately 56 days of work, in total.
